Understanding of antimicrobial defence mechanisms of penaeid shrimp should help in the design of efficient strategies for the management and disease control in aquaculture. In this study, we have specifically analysed the expression in circulating hemocytes of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) encoding genes, such as PEN2 and PEN3, ALF, crustin, lysozyme and a putative cysteine-rich peptide. We evidenced a relationship between the level of expression of some AMPs and the successful response of the shrimp, Litopenaeus stylirostris, to circumvent a pathogenic Vibrio penaeicida infection. Additionally, significant differences in some AMP transcript amounts are evidenced between control, non-selected shrimp line and the third generation breeding of shrimp selected... |

The causative agent of myonecrosis affecting cultured Penaeus vannamei in Brazil was demonstrated to be a virus after purification of the agent from infected shrimp tissues. Purified viral particles were injected into specific pathogen-free P. vannamei, resulting in a disease that displayed the same characteristics as those found in the original shrimp used for purification. The virus was named infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV). The viral particles were icosahedral in shape and 40 nm in diameter, with a buoyant density of 1(.)366 g ml(-1) in caesium chloride. The genome consisted of a single, double-stranded (dsRNA) molecule of 7560 bp. Sequencing of the viral genome revealed two non-overlapping open reading frames (ORFs). The 5' ORF (ORF 1, nt 136-4953)... |

This paper describes the latest developments on maturation and reproduction of Farfantepenaeus paulensis in captivity, with special reference to the studies conducted during the last decade at the Laboratory of Mariculture, University of Rio Grande in southern Brazil, aiming to improve the future outlook for a sustainable nauplii production of F. paulensis. Particular emphasis has been given on the reproductive cycle, ovarian maturation, maturation and spawning systems, artificial insemination, broodstock reproductive performance and maintenance of captive broodstock. |

The ontogeny of osmoregulationwas investigated in Litopenaeus stylirostris by studying salinity tolerance and osmoregulatory capacity. Shrimp at different larval and postlarval stages were exposed to various salinities and survival was monitored for 24 h. Survival rates exceeded 80% at salinity over 25 ppt (750 mOsm.kg(-1)) at all the stages. At salinities below to 25 ppt, salinity tolerance was higher in nauplii and zoeae than in mysis larvae. Postlarval stages were able to withstand lower salinities, e.g. 6.0 ppt (176 mOsm.kg(-1)) at PL9 stage, but they were more sensitive than larvae to salinities over 35 ppt (1035 mOsm.kg(-1)). Zoea and mysis larvae slightly hyper-regulated at all tested salinities. After metamorphosis, postlarvae progressively... |

The present study analyzed the reproduction of wild-caught Penaeus paulensis in relation to its molt cycle. The experimental design consisted of two treatments (continuous water flow and batch renewal) with two replicates. The stocking density in experimental tanks (1.50 x 0.96m) was approximately 7 animals/m², resulting in 4 males (23.9 ± 2.3 g) and 6 females (52.0 ± 5.5 g) per tank. Shrimp had their uropods cut for individual marking and female maturation was induced through the unilateral eyestalk-ablation. The intermolt period of females and males (17.4 ± 3.2 and 17.8 ± 4.6 days, respectively), number of days between molting and the first spawn (6.9 ± 2.8 days) and number of spawns in the intermolt period (1.4 ± 0.5), presented no significant... |
